Is This A Quantum Computer? Nobody Knows

Via Wired:

Google bought one. So did Lockheed Martin, one of the world’s largest defense contractors. But we still can’t agree on what it is they bought.

Pioneering The Brave New World Of Constant Recording

The Overly Documented Life

By A.J. Jacobs

"My brain is now wired to cameras and monitors of every kind. My limited attention span, laughable subjectivity, and weak memory have been replaced by eyes that see everything and hard drives that never forget. Fun. "

"...You've heard of Google Goggles? In 2013, Google plans to release Internet-enabled glasses that, the company boasts, have the capacity to display data on the lenses and also to record every moment (including, presumably, those moments when you get beat up for wearing Internet-enabled goggles). Very spooky. But then Bell and a handful of followers have already been doing that for years."

Chipotle First U.S. Chain Restaurant To Label GMOs

Via nationofchange:

Chipotle has officially announced that it will not only be labeling GMOs on the ingredients list of food products, but phasing out all GMOs on the menu.

From the Chipotle website:
“Our goal is to eliminate GMOs from Chipotle’s ingredients, and we’re working hard to meet this challenge…For example, we recently switched our fryers from soybean oil to sunflower oil. Soybean oil is almost always made from genetically modified soybeans, while there is no commercially available GMO sunflower oil. Where our food contains currently unavoidable GM ingredients, it is only in the form of corn or soy.”
Join the Monsanto Video Revolt!
On July 24th (and even before then), we are calling for all concerned citizens, those who just want to eat real food that’s not polluted with GMOs, activists, and others to create and upload a video of any length telling Monsanto why you stand against their control of the food supply and mutation of crops worldwide. The Monsanto Video Revolt is a manifestation of resistance against the GMO juggernaut that is Monsanto and its attempt at genetically manipulating every piece of food on your dinner table.

Peaceful Protest = Terrorism or The Definition Of Fascism

Via Alternet:

The PATRIOT Act. The U.S. Legal Code definition of terrorism was expanded to include a new meaning of “domestic terrorism” by Congress in 2001. This new definition considers domestic terrorism as:
“…activities that involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; appear to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States"
According to the ACLU, “this definition is broad enough to encompass the activities of…prominent activists, campaigns and organizations.” Given the right lawyer, TransCanada could convince a federal judge that monkey-wrenching and tying oneself to a construction vehicle is “dangerous to human life” or intended to “intimidate a civilian population.”  [Keep Reading]

Pentagon Bracing For Public Dissent Over Climate And Energy Shocks

Via Earth Insight by Nafeez Ahmed hosted by The Guardian:

The Pentagon knows that environmental, economic and other crises could provoke widespread public anger toward government and corporations in coming years. The revelations on the NSA's global surveillance programmes are just the latest indication that as business as usual creates instability at home and abroad, and as disillusionment with the status quo escalates, Western publics are being increasingly viewed as potential enemies that must be policed by the state.   [Keep Reading]

Onion Pi - Convert Raspberry Pi Into Anonymizing Tor Proxy

Via boingboing:

Browse anonymously anywhere you go with the Onion Pi Tor proxy. This is fun weekend project that uses a Raspberry Pi, a USB WiFi adapter and Ethernet cable to create a small, low-power and portable privacy Pi. Using it is easy-as-pie. First, plug the Ethernet cable into any Internet provider in your home, work, hotel or conference/event. Next, power up the Pi with the micro USB cable to your laptop or to the wall adapter. The Pi will boot up and create a new secure wireless access point called Onion Pi. Connecting to that access point will automatically route any web browsing from your computer through the anonymizing Tor network.

Neutralizing The Resistance By Pathologizing Anti-Authoritarianism

Are the Young People That Shrinks Label as Disruptive Really Anarchists with a Healthy Resistance to Oppressive Authority?

Many young people diagnosed with mental disorders have acted on their beliefs in ways that threaten authorities.
Many young people diagnosed with mental disorders are essentially anarchists who have the bad luck of being misidentified by mental health professionals, who 1) are ignorant of the social philosophy of anarchism; 2) embrace, often without political consciousness, its opposite ideology of hierarchism; and 3) confuse the signs of anarchism with symptoms of mental illness.

The Gaurdian Covers Predictive Programming

Via Alternet:

Did Hollywood Help Make NSA Surveillance Permissible?
Movies have got us used to the sight of people as pixellated quarry, tracked by powerful technology.

Last week's NSA leaks scandal had one scary side-story: a poll determining that a slim but clear majority of Americans weren't worried in the least about the 360-degree, all-platform access that the eavesdropping agency apparently now has to their phone, internet and wireless communications. Orwell's telescreen is part of our accepted digital furniture now, it seems, and Big Brother is regarded as a gentle protector rather than an iron-fisted tormentor even as sales of Nineteen Eighty-Four skyrocket on Amazon. And "precrime", a sci-fi concept of considerable vintage, is now a real thing, apparently. Another good reason that the representative fictional American citizen of our broken times is the zombie. The End of Media Ownership?

MICROSOFT

xbox-oneWill Xbox One allow you to trade in and resell disc-based games? Yes…sort of, says Microsoft in its fresh “How Games Licensing Works on Xbox One“ explainer, before winding up like some star NFL kicker and punting the ball downfield.
Before we proceed, give this a quick read — the relevant text:
Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.
Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.
In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners.

Could Golden Dawn Bring A New Wave Of Eco-Fascism From Greece To The US?

Via Disinfo.com:

Panagioti writes at the Earth First! Newswire:
In times of social upheaval, it seems a given that the far-right elements of an industrial empire will present themselves as a counter force in an attempt to allure some of the righteously indignant and, often painfully ignorant, folks who perceive themselves as a “middle class” in need of protection and salvation.
That is undoubtably the case with Greece today, where  members of the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn have begun firmly establishing themselves in political office, in the ranks of law enforcement, and now, with a larger street presence than ever before.
Golden Dawn is not only using KKK-style social services such as Greeks-only food banks and blood drives to bolster support, they also have a “Green Wing” attempting to propagate eco-fascist ideology among the country’s growing radical environmental movement.
Newsflash for all the anti-fascists eco-revolutionaries out there who are itching to get their hands on some of these assholes: you may be in luck, ’cause they don’t appear to be staying put in the Mediterranean.
Last week, for the fifth time in a year, members of Golden Dawn have made their presence known in US.
The most recent incident occurred on May 25, 2013 at the Stathakion Cultural Centre in Astoria, New York, during the screening of “Greek-American Radicals: The Untold Story”, a historical documentary about Greek immigrant’s experience in America, the role of immigrants in the radical labour movement and the journey from the early 20th century until the witch hunts of the McCarthy era.
Read more here.  And there’s an addendum:
Since posting the article “Could Golden Dawn Bring a New Wave of Eco-Fascism from Greece to the US?” last week, we received responses with some interesting article links that further elaborate on Golden Dawn’s disgusting and fraudulent use of ecology to promote white supremacy and general ass-kissing of the industrial right-wing elite.
Most recently, Golden Dawn members faked support for the popular anti-gold mining movement in northern Greece, and simultaneously forged relationships with mining companies. This link further explains (in Greek).
Another article link from last year in English, exposes the “Green Wing” of Golden Dawn in supporting the extermination of mental patients and the physically handicapped, perpetuating Hitler’s policies of genocide.
And finally, this link directs you to the site of publication “Ecology and Action,” Golden Dawn’s eco front group. Along the right side of this page, there is also links to several other European organizations using ecology (or a facade of it) to promote white supremacy and fascism. Most of the links lead to pathetic and/or outdated websites and Myspace pages. But still, it is helpful to know their rhetoric and to be able to identify it, in the case that it appears in your local scene, or website. (We suggest using a free translation service to get the general idea of what is being said.) And once again, you can witness several maddening efforts to co-opt Earth First!-esque images.

Is Smoking Tobacco Bad For You?

Smoking does not cause lung cancer. There is even some anecdotal evidence that it protects against lung cancer.

Smoking can protect against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and it can reduce the psychiatric, cognitive, sensory, and physical effects of schizophrenia.

If The Syrian Dictator Must Go… Why Not The Dictators In Saudi Arabia, Qatar And Bahrain?

By Washingtonsblog:

If We’re “Fighting for Democracy”, than Why Are We Arming and Financially Supporting Dictatorships throughout the Middle East?

Western and Israeli leaders call Syrian leader Assad a dictator.

Fair enough. He and his father have ruled Syria since 1971.

But what about Saudi Arabia? The Saudi royal monarchy has been ruling that region for hundreds of years.
