Panagioti writes at the Earth First! Newswire:
In times of social upheaval, it seems a given that the far-right elements of an industrial empire will present themselves as a counter force in an attempt to allure some of the righteously indignant and, often painfully ignorant, folks who perceive themselves as a “middle class” in need of protection and salvation.Read more here. And there’s an addendum:
That is undoubtably the case with Greece today, where members of the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn have begun firmly establishing themselves in political office, in the ranks of law enforcement, and now, with a larger street presence than ever before.
Golden Dawn is not only using KKK-style social services such as Greeks-only food banks and blood drives to bolster support, they also have a “Green Wing” attempting to propagate eco-fascist ideology among the country’s growing radical environmental movement.
Newsflash for all the anti-fascists eco-revolutionaries out there who are itching to get their hands on some of these assholes: you may be in luck, ’cause they don’t appear to be staying put in the Mediterranean.
Last week, for the fifth time in a year, members of Golden Dawn have made their presence known in US.
The most recent incident occurred on May 25, 2013 at the Stathakion Cultural Centre in Astoria, New York, during the screening of “Greek-American Radicals: The Untold Story”, a historical documentary about Greek immigrant’s experience in America, the role of immigrants in the radical labour movement and the journey from the early 20th century until the witch hunts of the McCarthy era.
Since posting the article “Could Golden Dawn Bring a New Wave of Eco-Fascism from Greece to the US?” last week, we received responses with some interesting article links that further elaborate on Golden Dawn’s disgusting and fraudulent use of ecology to promote white supremacy and general ass-kissing of the industrial right-wing elite.
Most recently, Golden Dawn members faked support for the popular anti-gold mining movement in northern Greece, and simultaneously forged relationships with mining companies. This link further explains (in Greek).
Another article link from last year in English, exposes the “Green Wing” of Golden Dawn in supporting the extermination of mental patients and the physically handicapped, perpetuating Hitler’s policies of genocide.
And finally, this link directs you to the site of publication “Ecology and Action,” Golden Dawn’s eco front group. Along the right side of this page, there is also links to several other European organizations using ecology (or a facade of it) to promote white supremacy and fascism. Most of the links lead to pathetic and/or outdated websites and Myspace pages. But still, it is helpful to know their rhetoric and to be able to identify it, in the case that it appears in your local scene, or website. (We suggest using a free translation service to get the general idea of what is being said.) And once again, you can witness several maddening efforts to co-opt Earth First!-esque images.

Hopefully these groups do little except highlight awareness of the seriousness of ecocide, and the seriousness of racism.
Unfortunately, they can do much more than that. This is an example of what I've been going on about for some time. Eco-fascism is dangerous. It can turn the green left into a brainwashed accessory to genocide. Our education on these subjects feed directly into the paradox of stringent government regulations vs. the dangers of concentrated power. "There ought to be a law..." We need to keep the concept of eco-fascism in the back of our minds and allow it to inform our thinking when it comes to advancing a green agenda. Only then will we be able to shift paradigms and finally dispense with the existing power structures. The confused and frightened masses are ripe for misdirection. Though, this is not another rabbit-hole, conspiracy within a conspiracy, manufactured resistance, etc, etc... Rather, no secret agenda need be implemented for humanity to lead itself back into the ever-grasping clutches of authoritarianism. It can all be done with the best of intentions and in the name of achieving the exact opposite.
Agree, but we need to be vigilante about all forms of fascism. Democracy's precarious position is so apparent in these times of shock. Hopefully anyone who would call themselves a part of the 'green left' who's worth their spit, would be sharply opposed to fascism. What I worry about is the everyman who has escaped one form of brainwash telling him that it's all hype and climate change is insignificant, but is manipulated by greenwashing and falls for anything with the word sustainable in the beginning, like sustainable growth. It is important to always look at the policy being proposed and not the character of the persons supporting it. This is the tactic of the libertarian wing of our political system, to talk platitudes about freedom and liberty, while proposing policies that weaken the public's power at the expense of the ownership class.
It's hard to say were to begin. So many overlapping layers of corruption and manipulation, it's hard to say which direction to move. I think above keeping eco-fascism in the background we need to be thinking about fascism in general. Whether under the guise of environmentalism, liberalism, conservatism, or libertarianism, we need to be vigilant about any policy or bill being proposed. Can't hop on the band wagon, that's the lesson to be learned from Obama, and be extra concerned about policies that are championed as bipartisan.
Indeed, over-correction on either end is to be guarded against. The everyman you mention is at the greatest risk of being handled. But I would argue that TED presenters and the like are also at extreme risk of self-delusion. When intellectuals operate in a bubble, they can find themselves prescribing solutions that overrule the individual. The greater good can be used to justify the stripping away of liberty. Just as the war on terror has been used to impose increasing controls on our society, so too can the threat of societal collapse in the face of ecological devastation. Most would agree that human cultures should be curbed when it becomes destructive to the systems which support it. However, While acting in good faith to mitigate human impact, the imposition of top-down controls will inevitably cause great injustice. Perhaps we are reaching a threshold and what we have held to be intrinsic human rights have become obsolete. A global supercomputer, a comprehensive database of all human activity could give us the tools to redesign ourselves and our society to maximize efficiency, allocate resources according to algorithms, determine optimum genetic coding, eradicate antisocial behavior at the molecular level. Yes, the promise of technology. I am no luddite, I advocate using technology to solve problems: solar panels, algae biofuels, networked computers, 3D-printing. Yet I reject genetically engineered crops, invasive tracking, nuclear weapons, etc... Global cooperation can prevent wars, end poverty and disease, restore ecosystems, but we are witnessing the opposite, we see supranational organizations and corporations working together to impoverish populations, degrade environmental protections and expand armed conflict. This is the power structure as it exists, and if we move to align policy with sustainable thinking under this system, the same unaccountable forces would wield incomprehensible power over the direction of humanity and the earth.
Technocratic rule has already been shown to serve only the entrenched interests at the expense of the rest of the planet, and now we are grappling with technology that has the power to alter the building blocks of life itself, with unknown consequences. Can we really entrust such awesome responsibility to a "benevolent" elite? The everyman is our only hope, we can only achieve a free AND sustainable future from the grassroots. We need every human on the planet to take total responsibility and empower themselves through access to information. As Anonymous has stated: we will no longer tolerate the sleeping masses. We must put an end to the "masses." Overspecialization has continued the existence of a disposable underclass, useless save for labor capital. Only when we abolish this underclass do we have any chance of achieving an egalitarian society. This should be the foundation for all future progress. No longer with humanity's future be directed by a small group of experts. We are all experts, we are all intelligent, free-thinking, creative individuals of equal worth! We will not be governed! Intelligence and responsibility are not the domain of the elite. They are universal facts of life. The elite are not the target, their power is derived from those willing to submit. That is why the masses are their own worst enemy and an enemy of the planet and the future. As long as the masses exist we will suffer oppression and impotence in the face of concentrated control. The benevolent dictator and the global supercomputer are one in the same; unquestionable authority, power over.
Yes, Agenda 21 might restore wilderness, shift to renewable resources, and redistribute wealth, but it is ultimately a global eco-dictatorship beholden to no population. It is not as if we will be able to go in and rework the less savory aspects of such a program, it will only consolidate and establish itself as a new greener crown, increasingly serving its own interests. And what would those interests become? Eugenics? Depopulation? Certainly those would boost efficiency and be oh most sustainable...
