When you start to look at US global military actions as a china containment policy, the pattern begins to emerge, and events seem a lot less random.
So do we accept the old-timers' paradigm of a hostile world in which power and resources are a zero-sum game, a world in which the United States must seek to dominate or be dominated? Or is this merely the delusion of old cold-warriors who hold fast to the reigns of power, even as they belatedly die off? This predicament has been created by an ill-conceived leveraging gamble. Our entire economy and thus our society's global hegemony has been vitally linked with the ultimately unsustainable petrodollar system. It was a cunning ploy when it was first implemented, and is largely responsible for creating the seemingly omnipotent nation-state that raised us, but we have passed the point of no return. Allowing the petrodollar to collapse now would be catastrophic to western hegemony (read globalization). Can the BRICS insulate themselves from this calamity as they are attempting or would they be dragged down with us? To what lengths will the US go to maintain its supreme dominance? Or is WW3 actually the goal? Nuclear holocaust is a perfect tool for depopulation, and the subsequent creation, after some time, of a completely new world order, a paradise in which the surviving elite will climb out of their underground bases and reclaim the earth with the vital DNA they've stowed away in their arctic seed vault. I think revisiting the history of the lead-up to the old cold war would be quite timely. I fear I'm not operating with adequate knowledge of that period.
